AeroFarms is the commercial leader in vertical controlled environment agriculture and is seeking a Buyer reporting to the Purchasing Manager with exceptional interpersonal skills, strong attention to detail with great motivation and drive.  The candidate has a superior work experience and a proven record of success.

AeroFarms is building a brand new state-of-the-art facility in Newark, NJ that will be the world’s largest indoor vertical farm for leafy greens and herbs and will serve the NY Metro area.  To support substantial interest from national retailers, AeroFarms plans a significant scaling of the business, including facilities in additional cities in the near-term.  In addition to North America, the company also has farms under development in other regions of the world.

Role

You will report to the Purchasing Manager and will assist in the administration of the company’s purchasing efforts.  The position will require excellent communication and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

The position will experience significant exposure to various aspects of the company’s business and to senior management through projects and assignments.  Main activities to include:

Daily Tasks:

  • Request quotes, negotiate prices and process Purchase Orders based on requisitions received
  • Vendor confirmation
  • Accurate expected delivery date updates
  • Collaboration with Accounts Payable to ensure payment. Resolve receiving discrepancies, invoices and supplier returns in a timely and complete manner
  • Maintain PO system data to effectively generate suggested POs
  • Maintain necessary required vendor documents (electronic and physical) such as W-9’s, indemnities, tax exemption forms etc.
  • Provide timely and appropriate material availability information to internal customers
  • Work closely with internal customers to communicate, follow up and help with issues related to purchased goods and services
  • Negotiate Pricing Programs as directed by the Purchasing Manager
  • Build and maintain vendor relationships to not only support PO fulfillment, but also negotiate volume discounts and price breaks wherever possible

Experience

  • Minimum 6 months Purchasing Experience

Knowledge

  • Logical negotiation thought process. Strong understanding of managing cost, customers and supplier relationships

Director of Construction

Role

In this leadership role, you will report to the COO and serve as a member of the management team leading the function responsible for delivering completed, commissioned projects to operations, starting from plans. Projects that have been designed and financed will be delivered to you. You will manage the construction of new facilities. You will be responsible for the installation and commissioning of AeroFarms equipment at new  and existing facilities, achieving timeline and budgetary targets, executing multiple projects simultaneously. You will transfer these completed projects to the operations group.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with operations and business development during the project development cycle to properly scope, design and set budgets for projects. Must have experience developing and improving standardized costing models.
  • Assume responsibility to deliver completed projects from business development, including managing the construction of new facilities and the installation and commissioning of AeroFarms’ proprietary equipment at facilities.
  • Work seamlessly with engineering to optimize the design, functionality, installation costs and operating costs of AeroFarms growing technology. Work collaboratively to achieve continuous improvement.
  • Partner with procurement to obtain equipment, labor and other items provided by third parties required for building and commissioning the facilities.  
  • Represent AeroFarms during the construction of build-to-suit buildings to AeroFarms’ specifications.
  • Manage schedules and budgets to achieve completed facilities on time and on budget.
  • Work with company resources and outside vendors to complete construction, installation and commissioning activities.  
  • Create scalable methods and processes to deliver completed projects, provide feedback loops for continuous improvement.
  • Continually develop the team of construction personnel, and manage the resources necessary for completion of construction activities.

Qualifications:

The hard working, self-motivated candidate will possess:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, engineering preferred
  • 15+ years of relevant experience executing construction projects in the food or manufacturing sectors.
  • 10+ years in a relevant Functional Management/Leadership Role
  • Experience managing the build-out of manufacturing or process equipment in industrial-scale facilities, 100K sq ft+.
  • Demonstrate experience in managing project and departmental costs, setting and meeting schedules and timelines, and experience in the procurement process.  
  • Experience developing commissioning plans and equipment validation plans, and delivering results.
  • Must effectively manage and grow a team of employees, acquire additional contract resources as needed and/or employ third-party service providers as required to accomplish goals.
  • Solid communication skills.
  • Ability to interface with third-party facility certifiers including worker safety, food safety and permitting agencies.
  • Must be detail oriented and well organized.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook, and Project.
  • Ability to travel (approximately 75% time).
  • U.S. citizenship preferred.
  • Experience directing work of 10 – 50 staff whether through direct employment or contract personnel.

Senior Corporate Development Analyst

Role

You will report to the VP of Corporate Development and will be responsible for maintaining the Corporate Development team’s financial models, conducting market research, business and financial analysis of new market opportunities and detailed reporting on the company’s current active projects. You will support AeroFarms’ entry into new markets. The position will require excellent communication skills, the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and a strong command of financial modeling, and financial and accounting principles.

The Analyst will experience significant exposure to various aspects of the company’s business and to senior management through projects and assignments and is expected to transition to another role within the company.

Main activities to include:

  • Financial Modeling: Develop and refine financial models, including cash flow models and financial statements

Director of Food Safety & Quality Assurance

Job Description:

The ideal candidate has 10-15 years of experience in regulatory compliance for food safety and quality assurance and is comfortable providing leadership to distributed teams of FSQA professionals. Experience in the perishable products (growing, packaging and shipping) industry is a plus.  You will report directly to the Chief Operations Officer and will have a close working relationship with the Director of Research & Development.

The position requires an individual who is very adept at focusing both externally (e.g. how is the regulatory market evolving) as well as internally (e.g. driving the company to meet evolving expectations in a comprehensive & efficient manner) to ensure full compliance with requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Drive all Strategic and Operational aspects of Food Safety, Quality Management, and Regulatory Affairs for the company.
    • Continuously monitor the regulatory environment (e.g. USDA, FDA, FSMA, etc.) and third party certification requirements (e.g., GFSI) to identify existing or potential gaps, and spearhead the identification and implementation of corrective actions.
    • Lead the Food Safety Committee activities and directives.
    • Direct the execution of studies and make recommendations for product shelf life.
    • Develop Quality Plan and Quality Control Points.
    • Develop and implement Environmental Monitoring Programs for human pathogens.
  • Champion the establishment and ongoing maintenance of a world class Food Safety and Quality culture across the company.
    • Ensure that Food Safety and Quality Assurance metrics are incorporated in all corporate plans.
    • Develop and direct internal audit programs.
    • Organize corrective action preventive action (CAPA) programs.
    • Provide overall direction to the implementation of a robust traceability plan; lead mock recalls.
    • Serve as corporate recall/crisis coordinator if, and when, required.
    • Develop / lead comprehensive training programs and associated tracking / reporting systems.
  • Direct day-to-day activities of FSQA personnel at all locations.
    • Manage and develop a highly talented team of FSQA professionals.
    • Ensure all aspects of operations (e.g. incoming packaging/supplies, growing, packaging, and shipping operations) are in full compliance with internal guidelines / regulatory requirements.
    • Establish and lead in-process, packaging, and shipping Quality control activities.
    • Lead the development and approval of relevant SOPs.   
  • Provide direction to all farm personnel (both FSQA and others) for sanitation and maintenance of a hygienic work environment.
    • Provide weekly FSQA updates for management reports.
    • Lead the development / execution of plant equipment cleaning / sanitation (including specialized farm equipment) and environmental monitoring programs.
    • Coordinate internal sampling programs, relationships with external laboratories, interpretation/tracking of lab results, and implement corrective actions if/when required.
  • Partner with Engineering team to optimize design for cleanability & sanitization.
    • Sign off on equipment and process designs and validation documents (IQ, OQ and PQ).
  • Effectively manage FS&QA and Sanitation costs and budget forecasts.
  • Provide direction to all farm personnel (both FSQA and others) in providing a safe work environment.
    • Develop, implement, train to and monitor employee safety protocols; develop / track metrics.

Requirements:

  • 10+ years’ experience leading Food Safety, Regulatory and Quality organizations in the Food Industry.
  • Experienced in providing leadership to distributed teams of FSQA professionals.
  • Possess all food safety certifications required by USDA, FDA, FSMA and GFSI.
  • Extensive knowledge of Food Safety and Quality systems, including:
    • Food Hygiene, HACCP, Food Safety Plans, Sanitation and GMP.
    • FDA, USDA requirements for growing and packaging leafy greens is a plus.
    • Internal auditing, external audits, and mock recalls.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Job Description

We’re looking for an experienced and talented senior scientist to provide scientific direction and leadership for our Research & Development Department in our new state-of-the-art facility in Newark, NJ. This position will be responsible for all aspects of research. You will be held accountable for optimizing growth of new plant varieties as well as increasing plant productivity. Furthermore, you will work closely with our Engineering Department to direct next generation grow towers for optimal growing conditions.  You will be the corporate senior scientist that will direct R&D in support of AeroFarms’ indoor vertical farms globally.  

In this role, you will help provide leadership for a talented team of scientists and will work cross-functionally to ensure success of long-range goals and strategies. You should be an experienced leader with a strong background in high throughput growing, horticulture, plant sciences or plant physiology. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate expertise in applied science and leadership in data analysis and integration efforts.  He/she will be an energetic, forward-thinking and creative individual with high standards and good judgment. Responsibilities

  • Develops short, mid and long term R&D strategies
  • Provides management, scientific leadership and creativity in initiating, designing and executing research

  • Minimum 7 years of experience in a scientific leadership position preferably in protected agriculture.
  • Strong leadership skills with experience managing a mid-size research team.
  • Experience working with engineers on prototyping equipment/tools preferred.
  • Expertise in high throughput imaging of plants considered a plus.
  • Ability to manage change in a fast-paced growth environment with interdependent teams.

Education

Ph.D in Horticulture, Plant Sciences, Plant Physiology or a closely related discipline.

Sales & Marketing Coordinator

AeroFarms is a change-the-world vertical farming company transforming agriculture with global headquarters in Newark, NJ.  The past 12 months have been an exciting time for us. Our team has grown five-fold during this period and we now need someone special who can apply their experience in Sales & Marketing to navigate the inevitable challenges and opportunities associated with our growth trajectory.  Must be passionate about food and making a difference with an insatiable curiosity about brands and connecting with consumers.

  • The experience necessary to work with our customers to forecast, process, monitor and report weekly sales orders and planning and executing in-store merchandising activities and demo programs.

  • Car to travel for market audits and events and ability to lift 25 to 50 pounds for set up of events. Ability to work weekends and evenings as needed because we want to connect with our consumers.
  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or work experience because you need to hit the ground running.
  • 1 to 3 years of relevant experience in Sales, Account Management, Merchandising, CPG, Marketing.

You might also have:

  • Worked in grocery, retail, or restaurant/hospitality because food experience really matters.
  • Experience with Nielsen/IRI and other syndicated data.
  • Knowledge of ERP systems for daily tasks, reporting and analysis.
  • Graphic design experience because a picture can tell a thousand words.
